Jade Rollers vs. Dermarollers - Which One is Better?

Jade Rollers vs. Dermarollers - Which One is Better?

It's a battle of the rollers and only can be victorious. Today's skincare market boasts all kinds of useful tools, creams, and serums, but some of the classics, like these rollers, are still some of the most effective skincare tools out there.

Except - you're trying to decide which one is worth the investment. While jade rollers are becoming increasingly popular, it's important to note what the dermaroller brings to the table. And why it essentially has the jade roller beat in a number of ways.

Jade Rollers - What Do They Do?

Jade rollers help to boost collagen and elastin, reduce puffiness, and give your skin brightness and luminosity by using one specific method and one specific method only: by increasing circulation.

When you roll with a jade roller, you're stimulating blood vessels and activating the lymphatic system; essentially boosting circulation and when combined with the coldness of the stone itself, helping to simultaneously contract blood vessels, which could reduce puffiness.

Suzanne Friedler, a Manhattan-based dermatologist, mentions jade rollers are about as effective as any form of facial massage when done correctly.

“Any time you massage any of the tissues, you’re increasing circulation. Your skin may look brighter, more luminous, maybe more contoured and less puffy,” she says. “But if you’re looking for substantive change, that’s not going to happen with the jade roller. It’s also not going to have an effect on inflammatory conditions like eczema or psoriasis.”

What the Jade Roller Can't Do

As far as anti-aging goes, jade rollers just don't cut it. When it comes to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, or other blemishes caused by aging or even sun damage, the jade roller does little to remediate this common skin issues.

Jade rollers are best used as relaxation techniques or for reducing puffiness and irritation, but only temporarily. In terms of long-lasting, consistent change, jade rollers just don't match up to other skincare tools out there, like the dermaroller.

Swap Your Jade Roller for a Metal Roller

There are various types of rollers out there, so that's not to say a jade roller isn't right for you. But if you decide you'd like to move towards this type of roller, try swapping out the jade for stainless steel.

Jade stone has microscopic pores that can harbor bacteria and can infect the skin if not disinfected properly. Stainless steel rollers on the other hand, like Gin Amber Beauty's Stainless Steel Anti-Aging Face Roller, don't have these pores, are easier to disinfect, and get colder than a jade roller does, improving that reduced puffiness and working more efficiently.

Dermarollers - What Do They Do?

Dermarollers are skincare tools with needled wheels that are rolled along the skin. When these needles puncture the skin, they create microscopic wounds.

How does this differ from what a jade roller does? While the jade roller gets its effectiveness from increased circulation, the dermaroller actually gets its benefits from the body's initiated healing response. As the body gets ready to repair the dozens of microscopic (and painless) puncture wounds you've inflicted in the skin, it sends nutrients and blood to those areas, where you reap the benefits of both increased circulation and cellular turnover, while boosting collagen and elastin and firming/tightening the skin.

As far as anti-aging goes, dermarollers take the cake. Dermarollers are known to assist in reducing wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and sagging skin. Dermarollers work to activate skin on a deeper level, allowing old or dead skin cells to slough off to be replaced by younger, healthier cells.

Dermarollers and Serum Absorption

Fun fact: dermarollers help up to almost 80% more serum to be absorbed by the skin. That's because the microscopic punctures a dermaroller creates in the skin are essentially direct channels to those deeper skin layers, where serums can travel to almost immediately to begin activating their benefits.

Can a jade roller do this? The answer to that is a sad no.

The Verdict

While both of these classic skincare rollers have their own benefits, it's clear who the winner is. While the jade roller or similar types of rollers can increase blood circulation and reduce puffiness, these effects are very short-lived.

Dermarollers on the other hand, activate healing responses and anti-aging processes below the skin, helping to reverse signs of aging and develop a younger looking skin and complexion. It's even recommended that jade rollers or similar, stainless-steel rollers be used prior to dermarolling, to enhance these effects even more.
